1808- Slave trade is prohibited
1820- Missouri Compromise: Missouri becomes a slave state and Maine is formed from Massachusetts. Also a line is created to divide slave and anti slave states.
1831- The Liberator (Anti-Slavery Magazine) is first published by William Lloyd Garrison
1850- John Brown leads a raid on the Federal Armory and is hanged for murder and treason
1850- Compromise of 1850 passed.
This consisted of five bills:
1) California will be a free state
2) New Mexico and Utah fell to popular vote
3) Texas gave up New Mexico land and received $10 Million
4) Slave trade abolished in District of Columbia
5) The Fugitive Slave Act passed

1852- Harriet Beecher Stowe releases Uncle Tom's Cabin, an anti-slavery book. Abraham Lincoln is quoted saying to Stowe,"So this is the little lady who started this great war."
1854- Kansas Nebraska Act is passed
1860- Lincoln, who is against slavery and the South secession, is elected. This results in tension between the North and South.
January, 1861- South Carolina secedes from the Union, leading to the secession of 6 other states. Four more states then join.
February, 1861- The Confederate Constitution is made as the South creates their own government
1861- Fort Sumter is attacked by the South, leading to the fort's surrender and the first shots of the Civil War.
1861- First battle of Bull Run
1862- Battle of Antietam, 23,000+ casualties
1863- Lincoln issues the Emancipation Proclamation, which declares that slaves in the seceded states are now free.
1863- The battle of Gettysburg is fought in Pennsylvania
1864- Lincoln repeals fugitive slave laws
1865- General Lee and the Confederate army surrender to the Union after the battle of Appomattox.
