The Confederacy and Union were the opposing sides fighting in the civil war. The Union represented the North and had Ulysses S. Grant as their General. The Confederacy represented the South and had Robert E. Lee as their General. The Union was referred to as the United States of America, while the South was referred to as the Confederacy. This is because before the war, both the South and North had been the USA. However the south seceded for they wanted slavery and were focused on the growth of cotton. While the north was focused on the abolition of slavery and the growth of industry. The north's focus on industry greatly aided them when the Civil War had started. The North could send supplies, troops, and more on railroads, send messages with the telegraph, and manufacture armor and weapons at a massive scale. However, the South never really took advantage of this idea.
Manufacturing was a big part of the civil war. It gave certain advantages to both sides. The south manufactured many if their goods in Georgia. There they made ammunition, gun powder, textiles, and much more. There facilities were also used as bases or even forts when ambushed. In a way, manufacturing gave the south a fighting chance against the bigger, industrial north. In the north, they utilized industry far more than the south did. Research shows that the north's industry and technological growth went up exponentially when the first arguments that lead to the war arose. The north put railroads, the telegraph, manufacturing, and more to use. They were given a head-start when it comes to manufacturing though, for they had started earlier than the South. With this head-start, they could make useful tools to combat the Confederacy, and ultimately win the Civil War.
The New York City draft riots were extremely violent outbreaks of working class men causing a great deal of destruction. This is because Congress passed laws that say men are going to be drafted for the "upcoming" civil war. Federal troops were sent in and many were either injured or killed. In the end the riots were settled down for the most part with a total of 120 killed and 2,000 injured.
States' Rights were a big controversy during the Civil War. The southern slave states said that they had the right to "protect slave property wherever they went." This was approved in the Dred Scott case. However, the north said that their rights were being taken away with the Dred Scott decision and the Fugitive Slave Act. This debate went on throughout the Civil War of whether slavery should be outlawed.
The telegraph is one of the most important technological revolutions when it comes to the Civil War. The telegraph used electrical lines to convey a message of clicks to a faraway message-reciever. These clicks are known as Morse Code, this is because a man named Morse created it. In the Civil War, the North fully put the telegraph into good use. They could send battle plans and strategies quickly across the country. This gave the north another advantage .
